Satbayev University scientists are working on elaborating the innovative technology for copper ores processing

Scientists of Metallurgy and Enrichment Institute at Satbayev University, headed by professor Bagdaulet Kenzhaliyev, have elaborated the technology for processing copper ores that can improve copper extraction and environmental situation in the industry.

With the help of joint efforts of employees at PA “Balkhashtsvetmet” and Institute’s researchers, the productivity of Vanyukov furnace increased 1.5-2 times. Autogenous melting technology, with introducing the new VF-2 furnace into industrial operation, has become the only one used at PA “Balkhashtsvetmet” and owing to the given technology, about half of all copper manufactured in Kazakhstan is produced. This made it possible to increase the output of copper cathode at BMMP to almost 200 thousand tons per year.

Currently, we are continuing the work on improving the technology of melting in Vanyukov furnaces, aimed at increasing the extraction of copper from raw materials, including the technology of continuous melting of copper sulfide concentrates in the two-zone Vanyukov furnace. With introducing the given technology, more than 2,000 tons of copper per year can be additionally obtained. In addition, by reducing the output of dump slags, the environmental situation at the plant's location may improve, which will lead to the increase in the enterprise’s competitiveness.

The project is led by the chief researcher, Academician of RK NAS Sultanbek Kozhakhmetov and Laboratory’s head, doctor of technical sciences Sergey Kvyatkovsky.
