Nobel Laureate Raekwon Chun: Kazakhstan successfully uses the climate agenda to create new economic opportunities
At the opening of the annual Satbayev International Conference 2026 ("Satbayev Readings"), Nobel Peace Prize laureate Raekwon Chun highly appreciated the contribution of Kazakhstan and Satbayev University to advancing the sustainable development agenda. In line with him, today the country is among the leaders who are turning climate challenges into new economic opportunities and jobs.
This year's “Satbayev Readings” are dedicated to "Technologies and innovations for adaptation and mitigation of climate change" topic and brought together representatives of science, government and business to find solutions in the sustainable development sphere.
– I am very impressed that University and Kazakhstan pay so much attention to sustainable development issues, – said Raekwon Chun. – Kazakhstan was one of the first countries to support the idea of "green" economic growth and proposed "Green bridge" concept. Today, the country is demonstrating leadership in transforming the climate agenda into economic growth and job creation.
In his key report "Turning net-zero into growth and job creation opportunities," Raekwon Chun emphasized that the transition to carbon neutrality should be considered not only as an environmental necessity, but also as a driver of technological economic renewal. He emphasized the role of universities as centers for training the personnel and developing solutions for a sustainable future.
The plenary session confirmed the conference main thesis: an effective response to climate challenges is possible only through the combined efforts of science, government and business. This position was supported by speakers at the forum Kanat Yerubayev, Arman Ashkin, Nursultan Kainbayev, Nurmukhamed Kartabayev, Kuanysh Omarbekov and academician Askar Zhumadildayev.
Conference practical dimension was represented by the exhibition of Satbayev University’s scientific achievements, which showed elaborations in energy, materials science, digital technologies and ecology. A campus tour of the university's research hub was also organized for the guests, demonstrating modern laboratories and research infrastructure.
Hence, Satbayev International Conference 2026 confirmed the status of “Satbayev Readings” as an international platform where global challenges are discussed and solutions for the sustainable future are formed.
