Satbayev University has opened the first production of reverse osmosis membranes and insulation materials in Kazakhstan

In Almaty, on the basis of Satbayev University Physics and Technology Institute in the territory of "Park of innovative technologies - Alatau" special economic zone, two new high-tech industries were opened at once. Projects have become an important step in evolving the domestic industry and strengthening the technological independence of Kazakhstan in the areas of water safety and infrastructure protection.

The first executed project is the serial production of reverse osmosis membrane elements by “Membraneco” company, the implemented project as a result of cooperation between science, business and the state. Satbayev University co-founded the project, providing scientific expertise and laboratory facilities. Financial support was provided by “Almaty Finance” and “Samruk-Kazyna” Fund, which opened up opportunities for concluding the long-term contracts with national companies.

Under the given contracts, “Membraneco” will supply domestic filter elements equipped with RFID tags for digital life cycle monitoring of filters used in water treatment systems. Project aims to accelerate the digitalization of the water treatment industry and reduce dependence on imported filter elements, providing Kazakhstan's industry and utilities with local equipment of international quality.

Launching the similar production is of great strategic importance. Previously, all reverse osmotic membranes were fully imported to Kazakhstan. Now, thanks to localizing the technologies, the republic receives its own high-tech solutions for water purification and desalination, which are in demand, including in arid regions (for example, the Mangystau region). “Membraneco” project is designed to help solve freshwater scarcity issue, while stimulating the growth of environmentally friendly technologies and creation of new high-tech jobs in the country.

The second project was the production of heat-shrinkable insulation materials designed to protect pipes and welded joints from corrosion and operational influences. The innovative materials were developed taking into account the industrial operation requirements and were adapted to Kazakhstan’s climatic conditions. Project was implemented by “InsulTech” as part of cooperation between science and industry with the support of Science Foundation and is aimed at forming and developing the national industrial base in the field of pipeline protection in the oil and gas, energy and utility infrastructure.

Performing the both projects is of strategic significance for the country. Launch of its own production of membranes and insulating materials contributes to the development of the local industrial base, creation of high-tech jobs, reduction of import dependence and formation of Kazakhstan's export potential in the knowledge-intensive and environmentally oriented technologies sphere.
