Satbayev University hosted an International scientific and practical conference "Role of groundwater in the sustainable development of arid territories", dedicated to 60^th anniversary of Hydrogeology and Geoecology Institute named after U.M. Akhmedsafin. The event brought together leading scientists from Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and other countries, bringing together experts in hydrogeology sphere to discuss topical issues of water resources and climate change.

Conference became a platform for exchanging the experience and discussion of the latest approaches to groundwater research. Participants presented the results of the institute's work, showing their elaborations in the field of geoinformation modeling, chemical analytical research and monitoring of groundwater quality. Of particular interest was the project to create an interactive atlas of Kazakhstan's groundwater, which includes more than 40 updated maps.

One of the central points of the conference was the understanding that groundwater is a hidden but strategically important resource, whose importance is increasing against the background of climate change and growing water scarcity.

"The water problem is particularly acute today, and the importance of groundwater for Kazakhstan cannot be overestimated," said professor Malis Absametov, director of U.M. Akhmedsafin Institute of Hydrogeology and Geoecology. - Since the time of Academician Akhmedsafin, Kazakhstani scientists have understood that the development of cities, industry and agriculture is impossible without the study and rational use of groundwater. Now that the climate is changing and rivers are becoming less reliable sources, attention to groundwater should only increase."

The event was attended by representatives of International Association of Hydrogeologists, who supported the conference at the international level. Following the meetings, a collection of abstracts will be prepared and materials reflecting the new methods of groundwater monitoring and modeling will be published.

"As a young scientist, I am glad that the conference provides an opportunity to share experiences with colleagues from different countries and talk about our research in a broader way than is possible in scientific articles," said Valentina Rakhimova, Vice President of International Association of Hydrogeologists.

Conference dedicated to 60^th anniversary of the Institute emphasized the continuity of scientific traditions and demonstrated the readiness of Kazakhstani hydrogeologists to solve global environmental problems together with the international community.
