Satbayev University Strengthens Cooperation with the Renewable Energy Industry in the Context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

On March 16, 2026, Satbayev University hosted a meeting between students and representatives of TotalEnergies Renewables Kazakhstan, aimed at developing professional competencies of future specialists and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The keynote speaker of the event was Thierry Plaisant, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables Kazakhstan. During the meeting, experts introduced students to current global trends in renewable energy, key aspects of the energy transition, and career opportunities for young professionals in international energy projects.

Particular attention was given to the 1 GW Mirny wind power plant project, one of the largest renewable energy initiatives in Kazakhstan. This project not only contributes to increasing the share of clean energy in the national energy mix, but also creates new opportunities for training highly qualified engineering professionals, thereby supporting the development of the country’s educational and research ecosystem.

The meeting also marked the next step in implementing a previously signed agreement. Starting from 2026, Satbayev University, commissioned by TotalEnergies, will annually train up to 14 students under a specialized program. Students will study in Almaty for the first three years and spend their fourth year at the University of Lorraine campus in Metz, France, including industrial internships at TotalEnergies energy facilities. Upon graduation, the students will be employed by TotalEnergies to service wind turbines at the Mirny wind power plant—the largest in Kazakhstan—which is capable of meeting the energy needs of approximately one million people, including residents of remote rural areas.

The event directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 “Quality Education” and Goal 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy.” Engagement between students and leading international companies enhances the quality of education by integrating practical knowledge into the learning process and developing skills that are in demand in the context of the global energy transition.

Satbayev University continues to strengthen partnerships with industry leaders, creating favorable conditions for training competitive specialists and supporting the sustainable development of the energy sector. Such meetings serve as an important tool for fostering collaboration between academia and industry, while helping students gain a comprehensive understanding of modern technological challenges and future prospects of the sector.
