Satbayev University’s young scientists have proposed a new way of revegetating the disturbed areas

A group of young scientists at Satbayev University is elaborating an innovative and environmentally friendly way to reclaim land disturbed by open-pit mining using hyper accumulating plants and mycorrhizae. The given initiative may be the beginning of a new stage in restoring soils contaminated with heavy metals, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions of Kazakhstan.
The scientific basis of the project is the ability of certain hyper accumulating plants to absorb and accumulate heavy metals from the soil, as well as the positive effects of mycorrhizae, symbiotic microorganisms living in the root zone of plants. This approach makes it possible to restore the disturbed landscape in a natural way and contributes to the sustainable development of ecosystems.
"The use of hyper accumulating plants and mycorrhizae is an effective and environmentally friendly technique adapted to the climatic conditions of Kazakhstan. Such biological technologies not only reduce the harmful effects of the mining industry on the environment, but also contribute to an increase in land suitable for agriculture," said Yryszhan Zhakypbek, PhD, project manager, professor at Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Satbayev University.
The project is currently undergoing the practical testing. The first positive results have already been recorded at the pilot sites – the ability of plants to accumulate heavy metals and an improvement in the ecological condition of the soil are being observed. These changes were highly appreciated by both the scientific group and the management of the enterprises where the project is being implemented.
The given research can make a significant contribution to the rational use of natural resources and environmental restoration in the mining regions of Kazakhstan. In addition, the project is a good example of the practice-oriented approach of young scientists at the intersection of science and production.
Satbayev University is a leading university in Kazakhstan in the field of mining, metallurgy and engineering technologies. University systematically implements scientific projects aimed at ensuring the environmental sustainability.
