The Dos-Mukasana dormitory has opened at Satbayev University

The student dormitory opened its doors at Satbayev University, where the legendary Dos-Mukasan ensemble originated. The renovated building received the symbolic name "Dos-Mukasan uyassy" and became not only a new home for students, but also a reminder of the rich history of the university. Just a few months ago, the given building was returned to the university by court order.
Former students, “Dos Mukasan” legendary ensemble members came: Dossym Suleyev, Murat Kussainov, Ulykpan Sydykov, famous graduates of Polytech, Kazakh National Research Technical University - Satbayev University.
Academician Ulykpan Sydykov shared his memories of creating the song "Toi Zhyry" (Wedding song), written in this dormitory more than half a century ago on the second floor in Room # 25:
"We composed it as a gift to our friend for his wedding," said Ulykpan Sydykov. – We had to enact in the evening, and in just half an hour we came up with the lyrics, melody, and immediately performed it. A few months later, the whole of Kazakhstan knew the song, and the people named the song on their own. 55 years have passed since then, and not a single note, not a single word has been changed."
The new and old dormitory houses an exhibition devoted to the work of “Dos Mukasan” ensemble. In its center there are rare manuscripts with the words and notes of "Toi Zhyry" song, which became the anthem of newlyweds in Kazakhstan.
University's Construction Department director Rishat Tynybekov, who oversaw the renovation, stressed that restoring the building was a serious engineering project:
"We tried to preserve the historical appearance of the hostel and at the same time equip it according to modern standards. Now students will receive not only comfortable living conditions, but also a space for study and creativity."
The design was elaborated by university doctoral students Daniyar and Assylgul Baydaralins, who submitted sketches in a short time and personally supervised the dormitory’s interior design. Some rooms in the dormitory are adapted to the needs of students with special needs.
The opening of the 200-bed dormitory was another step in evolving Satbayev University's student infrastructure. In the future, it will become even more comfortable and cozy. “Dos Mukasan” group members, together with the university management, announced a design competition for the best room. Collection of materials from “Dos Mukasan” era has been announced - personal archival photographs, letters, music and other valuable items, while a particularly important rarity will be awarded with the special prize of 1 million tenge; a separate competition for creative ideas is going to be held for students with the main prize – a modern TV; a competition for the best design of “Dos-Mukasan” cafe is also starting, where a special prize will be waiting for the winner.
In the coming years, University is planning to build new contemporary campuses and dormitories, including a 955-bed dormitory, to provide students with comfortable living and study conditions.
The return of the dormitory to University ownership became possible with the active participation of Procuracy of Turksib district in Almaty. It was on its claim that the court invalidated the illegal privatization transactions and ordered the dormitory to be returned to Satbayev University ownership. Thus, the historical building associated with the name of “Dos-Mukasan” ensemble has regained its true purpose - to serve the students.
