Young geologists of Almaty presented their projects at XI Open Olympiad at Satbayev University

The XI Open Urban Geological Olympiad of schoolchildren was held in Almaty on the basis of Satbayev University together with Almaty’s Palace of Schoolchildren. The event brought together students from 17 schools in the city and became an important platform for evolving the scientific interest in geology, as well as early career guidance for schoolchildren.

Teams of schoolchildren from 6^th to 11^th grade took part in the Olympiad. The participants presented research projects on geological research, environmental issues and the rational use of natural resources. After that, they demonstrated theoretical knowledge and skills of independent scientific work in geosciences sphere. Special attention was paid to the development of analytical thinking, presentation skills and a scientific approach to solving the practical problems.

All participants received certificates, and the winners and prize-winners were awarded with diplomas and valuable gifts. The main prize was an educational grant from Satbayev University’s Rector under "Geology and Exploration of Mineral Deposits" program, which was awarded to the best participant among 11^th grade students.

The organizers emphasized that holding such Olympiads promotes the popularization of geological knowledge, the formation of ecological culture and the strengthening of cooperation between schools and the university. There was organized a platform for exchanging the experience between teachers, club leaders and representatives of youth geological associations as well.

For Satbayev University, this is also an important part of the systematic work on training future specialists in geology and subsoil use sphere, the given specialists are in demand for the sustainable development of Kazakhstan’s and Central Asia’s economy. University advances the research skills of future students, forms ecological thinking, promotes an informed attitude to climate change issues, creating a sustainable basis for training a new generation of specialists capable of solving the current scientific and environmental problems in the region.
