Geothermal energy: Satbayev University and Kazhydrogeology have joined forces for the green economy future

Satbayev University hosted "Prospects for the use of geothermal water resources in Kazakhstan" scientific and practical seminar, dedicated to the issue of whether Kazakhstan can use its hot groundwater as a source of sustainable energy. Seminar’s key event was the signing of the cooperation memorandum between Satbayev University and Kazhydrogeology. The given step opens the way for joint research, training of specialists and introducing the new technologies in geothermal energy sphere.
"It is fundamentally important for us that the geothermal resources of Kazakhstan are studied systematically and on an ongoing basis," said Bolat Bekniyaz, Board Chairman of Kazhydrogeology. - Only a scientifically based approach will make it possible to apply these sources rationally and safely. The experience and technologies accumulated in our sector can be successfully adapted for exploring the geothermal systems."
The seminar brought together scientists, government officials, oil and gas companies, and experts from Russia, Turkey, and Iceland, who shared their views on Kazakhstan's potential and practical developments in geothermal energy sphere.
Based on experts, Kazakhstan has significant potential in the given area. Professor Vyacheslav Zavaley, who studied the potential of the Zharkunak deposit, stressed that the issue requires further assessment and development of new technologies for efficient extraction of thermal energy, and Honorary Consul of Iceland, Adema Zhanassova, shared the experience of Iceland, the country where geothermal energy has become the basis of the energy system.
"Geothermal resources are not only energy, but also ecology, and new economic opportunities," said Meiram Begentayev, Rector of Satbayev University. "Our role is to provide scientific expertise, train specialists, and help innovate."
At the end of the seminar, the participants agreed to continue joint research and formulate specific proposals for evolving the geothermal energy in Kazakhstan. According to them, success is possible only with the combined efforts of science, industry and the state. Memorandum between Satbayev University and Kazhydrogeology is the beginning of a long journey to create a new industry that can play an important role in Kazakhstan's transition to the green economy.
