Satbayev University promotes a healthy eating culture for children

Satbayev University hosted a practical workshop on organizing healthy nutrition in schools and kindergartens. The speaker was Almira Orlova, a certified nutritionist with more than 15 years of experience in rational nutrition.

The workshop brought together owners and founders of private educational institutions, representatives of public schools responsible for meal provision, and catering companies. This format made it possible to discuss modern approaches to organizing nutrition and to exchange practical solutions.

Special attention was paid to the new nutrition standards of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which entered into force on September 1, 2025. Under these standards, quality control of school and preschool meals is being tightened. Children’s diets must reduce sugar and salt content; fast food, carbonated drinks, and products with high levels of harmful ingredients are removed from the menu. These measures aim to build a culture of proper nutrition and reduce the risk of chronic diseases among children.

According to the World Health Organization, the issue of childhood overweight in Kazakhstan is becoming increasingly acute. Today, one in five schoolchildren is overweight, and by 2030, experts project that one in two children may suffer from obesity. Participants discussed what can be done at the local level so that educational institutions become platforms for shaping healthy habits among children and youth.

Aliya Zhaksalykova, Head of the Sustainable Development Goals Project Office at Satbayev University, emphasized that building a culture of healthy eating is not only a medical, but also a social priority:

“Healthy eating is not a restriction, but an investment in the future. The earlier we instill a proper attitude to food in children and our students, the healthier the younger generation will be,” she said.

Such events reflect Satbayev University’s strategy to advance the principles of sustainable development. Food outlets on campus have already worked to ensure students have access to healthy, balanced meals. Caring for the health of children and students is directly linked to global priorities – ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all at all ages.
