Seismology

The Master's educational program in the area  "Seismology" is intended for training specialists who are theoretically competent and practically trained in the sphere of fundamental research on the causes, preparation and process of earthquakes occurrence, as well as related consequences. Special attention is paid to the preparation of a long-term forecast of the sources of occurrence, strength, and repeatability of earthquakes.

The goal of EP 7M05302 “Seismology” is to educate specialists of a seismological sphere with an international level of competencies who are able to independently solve the problems of the propagation of seismic waves in the bowels of the Earth and related phenomena based on innovative methods and technologies of seismic-geophysical research (including modern software), using advanced methods of recording a natural seismic field.

Education is provided using modern computer programs. Foreign professors, leading experts from research institutes are invited to conduct lectures and consultations on modern problems of seismology. For practical training, graduates proceed to the institutes and companies, that are dealing with earthquake issues.

The phased solution of the main tasks of the educational program will help graduates to develop universal, general professional and professional competencies, determined by the «Seismology» profile: obtaining high-quality and professional knowledge in predicting the places of occurrence, strength and repeatability of earthquakes; conducting detailed studies of earthquake preparation processes in a real physical and geological environment, Earth block displacements and other changes in the geological environment in the foci, assessment of the source parameters, identification of earthquake precursors and ability to develop a long-term, medium-term and short-term earthquake forecast, seismic process control methods, evaluate the possibility of anthropogenic (technogenic) impact on seismicity. Applied tasks include registration and recognition of underground nuclear tests; obtaining by graduate students of high-quality and professional knowledge by stages and rational complexes of seismic-geophysical studies, processing, interpretation, and modeling of the obtained data.

Graduates of the EP «Seismology» are guided by modern scientific concepts, correctly set and solve research and practical problems, participate in practical activities, master the basic methods and the complex of knowledge of training and education, teaching methods in educational institutions of all levels and forms.

Graduates receive an academic master's degree in technical sciences with a 2-year education.
