Approaching the New Year Satbayev University clarifies their actions in commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals together with QS ImpACT expert Zoya Zaitseva
On December 25–26, 2023 a consultative seminar “Embedding the Sustainable Development Goals into the University DNA” was held at Satbayev University. The management, administration and teachers of the university together with Zoya Zaitseva ‒ Innovation Manager at QS World University Rankings ‒ conducted reflection, brainstorming, consultation and group discussion on global partnerships and reputation management.
Digging deeper into the mechanics of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, the Sustainability team of Satbayev University discussed with the colleagues modern approaches to teaching and recruiting international students, creating experimental projects to equip with not only knowledge and skills, but also the ability to distinguish between a declared commitment to sustainability and real actions. The focus of the team's main discussion implements values that reflect the next generation's request for sustainability. Plans for specific projects that give students the opportunity to feel involved and make an impact on a global level have been considered.
On the second day, members of the UN PRME working group on climate change joined the agenda being considered at the university. Dr Lavinia-Cristina Iosif-Lazar from Copenhagen Business School shared research findings on climate scenarios and demonstrated examples of using computational tools to predict temperature changes. Dr Marianna Poberezhskaya from Nottingham Trent University presented information on actions to reduce climate risks and international agreements in this direction.
Satbayev University invites universities in Almaty to participate in this work. Together with colleagues from Almaty Management University, International IT University, Kazakh National Women's Teacher Training University and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, many tasks have been discussed to build the knowledge, skills and partnerships necessary for a sustainable future.
Concluding the visit, Zoya Zaitseva invited Satbayev University to participate in global projects ‒ QS ImpACT and Future17 SDGs Challenge scholarships, in which students from all over the world work in interdisciplinary inter-university teams on real projects presented by companies, startups and global organizations.
The sustainable development agenda is becoming more important every day in the daily actions of Satbayev University employees. Plans for 2024 include the formation of new Sustainability teams, a portfolio of SDG projects and a pool of like-minded people to create a knowledge base for the future SDG Academy of Central Asia in partnership with Satbayev University.
With optimism and new ideas, we invite everyone inspired by the topic of sustainability in the coming year! In case of any queries, feel free to contact us by emailing at sdg@satbayev.university.
