International workshop on earthquake-resistant construction was held at Satbayev University

International practical "Modern methods of engineering protection of buildings and structures from earthquakes and other dynamic impacts" workshop was held at Satbayev University.

Seminar was organized by Satbayev University in cooperation with Eurasian Association for seismology, earthquake-resistant construction and protection from natural disasters and Central Research and Design Institute at Ministry of construction-housing and communal services of the Russian Federation (CRDI, Moscow).

The recent series of strong earthquakes in Eurasia shows that the issue of protecting urban and rural buildings located in earthquake-prone areas from seismic impacts remains very relevant. Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Bakhyt Zhautikov, who opened the seminar, stressed that the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings capable of withstanding seismic events is important to ensure the seismic safety of cities in Kazakhstan.

Rustam Akbiyev, Head of Integrated Urban Planning Security Department at FSBI "CRDI of Construction Ministry of Russia" and Vice President of Eurasian SEISMO Association, noted in his speech that joint work of all countries interested in it can ensure such security:

- The main goal of Eurasian SEISMO Association and of the given seminar is Eurasian format of cooperation. "We will continue to work together, this is a very relevant area in earthquake-resistant construction," Rustam Akbiyev said.

The meeting’s principal goal was to familiarize construction specialists with contemporary methods of engineering seismic protection of buildings and structures, as well as to preserve and transfer to the next generations the creative scientific connection that existed between Almaty and Moscow schools of earthquake-resistant construction.

The seminar was attended by well-known scientists, managers and specialists of enterprises producing vibration and seismic insulation systems, teachers, doctoral students and undergraduates of universities, bodies of expertise and construction supervision, scientific, innovative, design, construction organizations, and other interested persons.

International experts from Russia, Kazakhstan, and the CIS countries shared the results of experimental and theoretical research and new design solutions, experience in applying earthquake-insulating structural solutions in practice, and discussed further steps to evolve the theory and practice of earthquake-resistant construction. The scientists who spoke at the seminar tried to arouse professional interest in the development and practical application of earthquake-resistant construction methods.

Workshop’s moderator was doctor of technical sciences, international expert, member of Presidium of Eurasian SEISMO Association, corresponding member of RK IAE and NAE, Honorary builder of Kazakhstan Mirken Abakanov.

Workshop results were summed up under the chairmanship of Director of Architecture and Construction Institute named after T.K. Bassenov, doctor of Architecture, academician of IAAM Bolat Kuspangaliyev. The participants made a decision to establish the T.J. Zhunussov Medal "For contribution to the development of earthquake-resistant construction" and initiate a cooperation program between Satbayev University and Eurasian SEISMO Association, which will include joint research, seminars and innovation. Within the framework of cooperation, Kazakh subsidiary of Eurasian SEISMO Association will be opened on the basis of Satbayev University.
