The first Republican Geological Universiade results have been summed up
Satbayev University training ground, located near the Malyi Karatau ridge in Zhambyl region, became a place for testing the practical geologist skills and knowledge of Earth science for students of nine universities and one college for 5 days.
Based on Universiade results, Semei Geological Exploration College team took the first place, the team of Satbayev University ranked the second place, Nazarbayev University’s students closed the top three.
Universiade program included lectures and consultations by scientists and practitioners on general and structural geology, crystallography and mineralogy, petrography, paleontology, hydrogeology and geophysics.
A tent camp was set up for the participants. Here they spent the night, during the day, as befits real geologists, went hiking along the routes planned for the competition, beat off rocks and minerals. In the evening, they performed desk work, made maps and discussed what they had done around the campfire to the sound of the guitar.
In addition to professional skills, future geologists competed in sports and held creative contests.
The organizers also came up with the geological quest for students, which became a supplementary opportunity for communication, networking and exchange of experience between young specialists and luminaries of geological science.
Karatau educational geological site of Satbayev University is located 60 km from Taraz city. This is the point on the planet - the outcrop of several geological epochs that span billions of years of Earth's history. This is the natural textbook that gives you the opportunity to touch the planet history, see with your own eyes the evidence of geological processes and study them as an open geological map with a hammer in your hands, following in the footsteps of the great Kazakh geologist Kanysh Imantayevich Satbayev.
"Despite the fact that our bowels contain huge resources, almost the entire periodic table, many of our reserves were explored back in Soviet times and are now depleted. In this situation, new approaches to geology are needed that will create significant opportunities for economic development due to discovering the new deposits not only in the field of hydrocarbons, but also in rare earth metals sphere necessary for the digital industry and other industries," says Askar Syzdykov, Director of K. Turyssov Geology and Oil-Gas Institute at Satbayev University.
The initiator of Universiade was Geology Committee of RK MIS, and the principal organizer was K. Turyssov Geology and Oil-Gas Institute at Satbayev University.
University took over the training, developed a rich and varied contest program, attracted the leading specialists and provided all the necessary conditions for the participants.
The event was also supported by such companies as Kazakhmys Barlau, ERG, ERG Exploration, KAZ Minerals and Onyx-R, which allowed organizing the Universiade at a high level, and the active participation of universities and colleges from different regions of the country gave the event a large-scale character.
