The Second Samarkand Expedition of the Architectural Institute

The Second Samarkand Expedition of the Architectural Institute

September 3, the student works exposition opened at the "Institute of Architecture, Construction and Energy a.n. T.K. Basenova”. This exhibition of graphics and photographs is devoted to the practice, which has already been held for the second year in the city of Samarkand (Uzbekistan). The students visited the most significant architectural monuments of the city such as Gur-Emir, Registan, the Bibi-Khanym mosque, the Shahi-Zinda ensemble, the Afrasiab ancient settlement and held a series of plain-airs. The practice was attended by 9 first and second course students which were selected through competitions.

Practice in Samarkand is an important stage in the formation of professional architects. A series of plain-airs, the experience of perception and artistic understanding of the ancient masterpieces of architecture of Samarkand in XIV-XV centuries help students to rethink traditions and it also helps to contribute to the development of architectural creativity.

Vladimir Yaskevich, the head of the practice, lecturer of the department "Architecture" said:

“In the era of globalization, national and regional identity is particularly valuable in art and architecture. That is why the purpose of the practice is to enable students to feel the regional identity of Asian region. It is important to visit the atmosphere, among such monuments that would reflect it most fully. Samarkand is one of those beautiful places where are a lot of significant and interesting monuments, and where you can immerse yourself in such an atmosphere. We hope that the received impressions will leave a big mark on the further architectural creativity of students.”

The first international field study practice for architecture students of first and second course was held in Samarkand in 2017. As part of cooperation agreement in the field of architectural education, students of our university had the opportunity to visit this city and touch the works of ancient architects and the legendary culture of Uzbekistan . The program is open through the extensive work of B.U. Kuspangaliev, the Director of the Institute of Architecture, Construction and Energy; funding was provided by Satbayev University.
