Satbayev University has opened up new horizons of geospatial technologies on GIS Day Kazakhstan 2024
As part of celebrating The International Day of Geo-Information Systems, GIS Day Kazakhstan 2024 international conference began at Satbayev University, which brought together professionals, researchers and business leaders who use geographic information systems in their work. This year, the conference speakers have continued to highlight innovative applications of GIS technologies, paying special attention to solving the environmental problems, sustainable urban development, the use of artificial intelligence and digital transformation of various industries.
Conference was opened by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Raissa Uskenbayeva, who stressed that geo-information systems are used in all modern industries - oil, mining, metallurgy, and data analysis can change the landscape of the entire industry in Kazakhstan. And Kanysh Satbayev University, which has always been a leader, plays a key role in bringing together interdisciplinary teams for these changes.
Conference was made possible thanks to Innovative Geomatics Center at Satbayev University, which brought together leading experts, innovators, young professionals and representatives of government agencies making decisions about the industry’s future. Conference was organized by Geomatics Innovation Center’s director Elmira Orynbassarova, Angelika Kamza, Venera Junisbekova, Ainur Yerzhankyzy, Akmaral Tokbergenova and Ainur Ryshchanova. Among the outstanding graduates of the university who made a significant contribution to organizing the conference, one can mention Almas Kenbayev, director of National Cartographic and Geodetic Center, Chingiz Sadykov, director of Geo-Alidada, as well as many others.
A job fair was organized within the framework of the conference - University students can fill out the questionnaire and get an interview with one of the partner organizations of the conference: NurA-System, Geoken, Leica Geosystems, Data+International, GeoAlert, Softprom. Most of these companies constantly support the university by providing jobs to graduates and supporting the educational process, like Data+International, which, in addition to the conference, provided Surveying and Geodesy Department with 50 licenses to work in ArcGIS Pro.
The participants noted that such conferences not only promote the exchange of experience, but also unite business, industry and science.
- We expect that new projects will be born within the framework of the given conference, since geo-information systems are software that is used literally everywhere, - said Kanai Rysbekov, director of O. Baikonurov Mining and Metallurgical Institute. - For example, we will soon open "Modeling of mining automation" laboratory - and these systems will also be applied there! And today we are trying to find a common language with the purpose to effectively solve such issues in the future.
The second day of the conference will be devoted to a map contest, a cake contest and practical workshops that will give all interested people the opportunity to try working in geo-information systems in practice. As in previous years, the organizers invite the interested people to take part in workshops and discussions that will determine the future of geospatial technologies and their role in solving the most pressing problems of the region.
