Satbayev University hosted a master class on cybercrime and data protection

A lecture by Azamat Kaliyev, Lieutenant Colonel of Economic Investigation Service, head of Forensic division under Economic Investigations Department in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan Agency for Financial Monitoring, was held at Satbayev University. He told the students about modern cyber threats and showed by his example how fraudulent methods of hacking accounts in messengers and social engineering are taking place.
Azamat Kaliyev noted that modern criminals use high-tech methods, including artificial intelligence, social engineering and voice substitution to deceive citizens, and this problem concerns all citizens.
“Do not think that if you have little money, then there is no one to hack you. Scammers may be interested not only in your finances, but also in your connections and contacts. For example, a fraudster may ask people for money on your behalf, and you will have to deal with the consequences,” the expert said.
In his lecture, Azamat Kaliyev spoke in detail about various cases of fraud, focusing in detail on how the victim can become a "dropper" - a person whose bank data is used to conceal and withdraw money. "Dropping" is complicity in a crime and is subject to criminal punishment. The expert stressed that this area has only recently received official recognition in Kazakh legislation and requires more active work by law enforcement agencies.
The lecturer emphasized that the main protection against online fraud is care and prevention. Among the basic safety rules, he highlighted:
- Do not disclose personal information on the Internet, in telephone conversations and communication with strangers;
- Do not follow links or download unknown files and images;
- Don't be fooled by promises of easy earnings and suspiciously lucrative offers;
- Check information in official sources;
- Do not answer calls from unfamiliar numbers, refuse requests to transfer money or give a code (any one).
The lecture aroused great interest among the students, who actively asked questions about cybersecurity and methods of countering criminals.
Satbayev University continues to invite leading specialists to conduct educational events aimed at improving the digital literacy and data protection, so that university graduates are ready for the modern world challenges.
