In memory of the outstanding scientist, Satbayev University unveiled a memorial plaque of Professor Serik Kumekov

On January 11, 2025, in honor of 80^th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist, doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, professor Kumekov Serik Yeshmukhambetovich, there was unveiled a memorial plaque. The memorial sign is installed on the facade of the house where the scientist lived and worked, in recognition of his great contribution to science and education

The opening ceremony was attended by academician of RK NAS Bulat Kumekov, Rector of Satbayev University Meiram Begentayev and Vice-rector for Science and Corporate Development Yerzhan Kuldeyev, Vice-rector of KazATU named after S.Seifullin for science and innovation Yerzhan Syrgaliyev and other distinguished guests.

Serik Yeshmukhambetovich Kumekov (November 17, 1944 - May 29, 2021) began his scientific and teaching career in 1967 after graduating from Tashkent State University. He completed his scientific studies at Leningrad Institute of physics and technology named after A.F. Ioffe, where he defended his PhD thesis in 1973. In 1988, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences.

Since 2001, professor S. Kumekov's activity was closely connected with Satbayev University. He held key positions, including Director of science and international relations department, head of General and theoretical physics department, and research professor at Engineering physics department. Since 2010, he was the head of High Technologies and Sustainable Development Institute, later renamed High Technology Engineering Institute at Satbayev University.

Serik Kumekov made a significant contribution to the evolvement of fundamental foundations of nanotechnology in Kazakhstan. He is the author of "Нанотехнология негіздері" monograph in Kazakh and “General physics" textbook in English. Under his leadership, an engineering laboratory was established at Satbayev University, on the basis of which international research projects were implemented with the participation of scientists from the USA, France, Germany and other countries. Under his leadership, the university opened "Technical physics" degree program at all three levels of training, as well as doctoral studies in the fields of "Nanotechnology and nanomaterials" and "Physics".  He also participated in implementing a number of important projects under the state and international programs of RK Ministry of education and science.

For outstanding achievements in science and education, Serik Yeshmukhambetovich was awarded “Kurmet” order, the insignia and the title of "Best University Teacher".

The memory of Professor S. Kumekov will inspire new generations of scientists, his achievements continue to serve as the basis for the further advancement of science and education in Kazakhstan and beyond.
